The six states that don’t are Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Utah and Nevada. While the reasons vary, they generally involve religious concerns, a desire to keep gambling profits in-state and budgetary constraints.
Despite the low odds, lottery enthusiasts continue to invest their money in these games, and some of them are able to win substantial sums. In one case, a Michigan couple in their 60s won $27 million over nine years by using a strategy that involved buying thousands of tickets at a time to ensure they had a good chance of picking the right numbers. They did this by studying the past results and finding patterns in the numbers that appeared most frequently.
While it is possible to develop a system for playing the lottery, experts warn that it’s important not to treat it as a financial bet. Instead, treat it as entertainment.
